Our People

We believe in treating all people equally irrespective of anyone’s personal conviction, but choose to recognise everyone’s inherent immeasurable value as a child of God. From this conviction, we are able to envision a better future for our people based on their worth and God-given potential. This doesn’t only provide our community members with an initial layer of dignity which in turn develops hope, self-belief, and eventually confidence, but also gives them a sense of responsibility to take ownership of their lives and actions.

Children

“It is not beyond our power to create a world in which all children have access to a good education. Those who do not believe this have small imaginations.” – Nelson Mandela

Young children are the future of our country. Thousands of young children, across Gauteng, are placed in informal day care centres with poor hygiene, bad nutrition, and often little or no educational stimulation. This has a catastrophic impact on the future of these individuals, and inevitably the future of our country.

Research has shown that 90% of human brain development happens between the ages of 0 and 6 years. This development happens optimally when children are well-nourished, feel safe, loved and are appropriately stimulated. By providing holistic day-care in the early childhood years, children stand an excellent chance to grow into responsible adults and contribute to their communities meaningfully.

PEN’s focus is to support and guide ECD Centre owners and staff, through our Pre-School Forum, in order to ensure that young children in their care are safe, nourished and stimulated.

Our Programs include:
Pre-School Forum, Pennies Pre-School

In 2020, these programs made an impact on 55 Schools and 3000 Children.

Youth

“To the youth of today, I also have a wish to make: be the scriptwriters of your destiny and feature yourselves as stars that show the way towards a brighter future.” – Nelson Mandela

More than 19 million youth, aged 5 to 35 years, live in South Africa, making up nearly 30% of the country’s population. National unemployment rates, for youth aged 15 to 24 years, escalated to 55.75% by the end of 2020, thus opportunities are scarce and poverty is abounding. The youth population is the hardest hit with 32% of people between the ages of 15 and 24 neither in education, training nor employment. There are multiple factors and social ills that contribute to this reality, and together they have a devastating effect on the well-being of our youth; leaving many feeling disillusioned and hopeless.

Our interventions are aimed at empowering young people to become servant-hearted and economically active leaders in their households and communities.

Our Programs Include:
Education, Life skills, Entrepreneurial Development, Family Support and Precious Pearls (OVC home).

1166 youth were impacted through these programs in 2020. Be inspired by the future of our nation.

VULNERABLe Adults

“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” – Nelson Mandela

Since its formation in 1992, PEN has supported vulnerable adults in our communities, to rewrite their life stories. Our work with vulnerable families includes homelessness, unemployment, prostitution as well as support for mothers who are unable to care for their new-borns.

Through our holistic, multigenerational system, vulnerable adults are encouraged and enabled to break free from the life of homelessness, drug abuse, sexual abuse, unemployment and poverty. Our purpose is to journey together with them from a place of dependency to a place of interdependence so that they can reach their full potential in Christ.

Our Programs Include:
Drop-in centres (Bethesda & Women Arise), Temporary and Transitional Housing.

In 2020, 321 vulnerable people were assisted. Be empowered through the transformative stories of our community members.
